What does it mean that an island in the Maldives is in an atoll?
An atoll is the remains of a volcanic island that has been encircled by coral reefs. This makes atolls look like a circle of land with a shallow lagoon in the centre.
Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is 99% water and consists of approximately 1200 coral islands located on 26 atolls.
300 of these islands are inhabited, of which approximately 110 islands have been developed into hotel resorts. It's peaceful and tranquil and unbelievably beautiful.
Our hotel is located on the local island of Maafushi. This means that here you will also experience "real" Maldivian life and not just luxury resort and hotel life like many of the other islands.
Maafushi is one of the inhabited islands in the Kaafu Atoll and a local island close to the capital island of MalΓ©.
The island's proximity to MalΓ© and its transport hubs has allowed Maafushi to become a popular destination for tourists visiting local islands.
The map here is to show you where we are located.
The islands are so small that at this short distance they can't be seen as individual islands at all. So the blue dot Maldives just indicates that here, in the middle of the water, are the many many small paradise islands π΄π€©.
