We're catching squids πŸ¦‘πŸ™

Flashback to when we went squid fishing with Reebe (one of the locals from Maafushi). Reebe knows a lot about squid and lobsters, well in general many animals of the sea... πŸ¦žπŸ¦‘

We were very interested to learn a lot about it and he loves to share his knowledge. Reebe lives on Maafushi with his wife and three children. He has been a guide at Shadowpalm where we got to know him through.

We learnt how to find octopuses, how they live and what they feed on, as well as what animals they are eaten by. However, an octopus can camouflage itself and the suction cups work up to an hour after it is dead - it's pretty crazy to think about. The octopus gradually loses the ability to use the suction cups and the colours disappear. Octopuses build a "wall" of broken coral around their home. Reebe also said that you could tell if it was "home" or not. Which is crazy!

Once we caught the squid, Reebe killed them and then we put them in a waterproof bag so we could swim around looking for more squid without worrying about sharks (e.g. blacktip reef sharks). They can smell the squid, but basically the sharks are so small and they very rarely do anything. We have never experienced it.

We managed to catch 3 cephalopods in all. Or that is, Reebe did and we watched. But it was also a really crazy experience. It was something we had never seen or tried before. He lured them out of their hiding place/home with green soap. It was a really wild experience. He also showed us where there were lobsters and took some out, but we let them go this time. Because we have to have some good experiences🦞

In the evening, Reebe and his family invited us to dinner at his home, where he had cooked the squid we had caught that day. Here we had several local dishes. Everything from squid cooked in different ways, some rice, French fries and of course chicken.

It's no secret that we're not the biggest fish eaters in our family, but we always try to taste what is served. Sometimes it turns out to be not quite as bad as "expected". However, it's also healthy to try something new once in a while, but it's still nice to know what you're actually eating.

But you can be cheated sometimes and that's not so great. Most people know the feeling of thinking you've had a deep-fried onion ring and it turns out to be squid instead, or just to take another example, the feeling of having a chocolate bun and it turns out to be a raisin bun... Well, you can't be lucky every time.

However, there's no getting around the fact that squid is probably generally a bit rubbery, no matter how fresh it is πŸ™

Check out our GIF with pictures from the trip and at the end, where we get served the squid we caught.
