About the local island, Gulhi
Gulhi is a small, inhabited local island in the Kaafu Atoll in the Maldives, located in the southern part of the Malé Atoll. The island is approximately 20 kilometres south of the capital Malé.
Gulhi is a compact island with a length of about 400 metres and a width of about 225 metres. According to the 2022 census, the island has a population of 976 people, including foreigners. Gulhi combines a peaceful atmosphere with access to beautiful beaches and water sports activities, making it an attractive destination for those looking to experience the natural beauty of the Maldives.despite its modest size, Gulhi offers several facilities for visitors:
The island's beach aka. "Bikini Beach" is known for its white sand and crystal clear waters where tourists can enjoy the sun and swim. As Gulhi is a local island, it is recommended to wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees when moving around the island to respect local customs. At the bikini beaches on the island, you can swim in swimwear. On other beaches, swimmers should wear clothing that covers the body.
Gulhi is popular for activities such as snorkelling, diving and surfing. There are two PADI diving centres and a water sports centre on the island. 🏄🏼♀️🏄🏼♂️
The island has several souvenir shops, cafes, mini markets, a bashi playground and a mosque. It's a good idea to bring cash in local currency (rufiyaa) or US dollars. There is also a small school on the island. Most children who go to high school or university go to larger islands, such as the main island of Male, or to a completely different country to study. 🇲🇻
As Gulhi is a local island, it is not possible to bring or buy alcoholic drinks on the island. You either have to go to a resort to do that or out to a party boat 🍹🍻🥂
We have visited Gulhi ourselves, including the time when we distributed LEGO to the school, but also just as "normal tourists" and enjoyed the beach. When we were on the island, there were swings in the water - super cosy and a great place to take pictures😍
