Day trip to the main island of Malé
You can easily take a day trip to Malé either by local ferry or speedboat. The journey takes about an hour.
We've been on several day trips to the main island and around Malé. Among other things, we went to a local market where they mainly had fruit and vegetables.
Of course, we also visited the local bakery, where we also bought a few things to see what they had and taste some of their products/bakery products, as they are said to be the best in the entire Maldives.
On this trip we also went to the local fish market, where there was a whole lot of new fresh fish coming in. It was busy 🐟
Did you know:
Malé is the main island of the Maldives. There are about 150,000 people living on Malé & about 80,000 on Hulhumalé, which is an artificial island that was created to alleviate overpopulation as there was no more room on Malé for more inhabitants. Therefore, it's mainly high-rise buildings that you see there to accommodate as many people as possible on the small island.
It's mainly locals from small islands further away who need an apartment to work/study and support themselves and their families. In addition, there are also people from other countries who work on some of the smaller islands close to Malé who live there. Malé and Hulhumalé are about 5.8 square kilometres together.
