Building materials arrive by boat
Building a hotel in the Maldives is hard work. And you can't just drive down to the local Silvan and buy more.
Everything is more hassle than we're used to at home in Denmark.
All building materials and tools have to be transported to the island by boat and towed or driven on a lorry and truck from the boat to the hotel. The building materials are loosely loaded on the ferry and must therefore also be carried piece by piece on land and on to the hotel.
At the hotel, everything is carried with manpower - local Maldivian labourers π πͺ. Tools and machines are also used, but it doesn't look like home in Denmark, everything is more primitive, but it works. The construction progresses day by day.
We're making a lot of changes to the original floor plan and distribution of the rooms. We have taken over a building that was already under construction and up to 3 storeys high. We're building up to 6 storeys.
The original floor plan has been completely redesigned and what was intended to be a food lift is being expanded to become a real lift so that our guests don't have to walk up to the 6th floor.
We put large and bigger windows in all rooms, and we're also building balconies for the rooms.
Every day there's a construction meeting and decisions are made about who's in charge of what today, and then it's just a matter of getting on with the building work. If it rains... well then you put on a raincoat... and keep building π.
Our partner Shadopalm and his parents help us with purchases and orders. We make shopping lists and order goods based on the engineers' calculations and wishes.
It's really exciting... we're on uncharted territory and we love it.
